Gender equality is one of the Swiss Student Union’s main concerns. Equality in higher education and research means two things: firstly, guaranteeing equal opportunities for all genders, i.e. equal access to education and research, equal chances of success, and identical career opportunities. This demand addresses gender inequality, which can be viewed from two perspectives: “horizontal segregation” (unequal distribution of genders in different educational and research units) and “vertical segregation” (the disproportionate number of qualified women* who abandon academic careers). This segregation is still very pronounced in Switzerland and must be eliminated. Furthermore, equality in higher education and research also means systematically taking gender into account in research and teaching. Academic careers still seem less attractive to women* than to men*, and the figures show that women* are underrepresented in the upper echelons of academic careers. That is why we are working with various commissions to promote equality in higher education in Switzerland.
