The Association of Swiss Student Bodies and the Student Union of the University of Zurich (VSUZH) would like to take a joint stand in light of recent events and lay the foundations for constructive and future-oriented cooperation.
The NZZ’s coverage of the student protests in May 2024 contributed to the escalation of the conflict. Factual and critical reporting is important. In our view, however, it is the task of the media to report on events and not to influence them. The VSS and VSUZH regret that the NZZ was not given the opportunity to comment on the Artikel vom 04.12.2024.
In view of the political challenges posed by the Gaillard report and the austerity measures proposed by the Federal Council, the VSS and VSUZH will continue to stand united on this issue. These austerity measures not only jeopardize the quality of the Swiss higher education landscape, but also equal opportunities and the social foundations of students. We need a strong, united voice to fend off this attack on education.
The VSS regrets that there have been errors in communication in connection with the discussions surrounding the student protests. Our common goal is to act in the interests of Swiss and Zurich students and to strengthen dialog and cooperation.
The current challenges require determination and a strong commitment to the interests of students. The VSS and VSUZH continue to advocate for a non-discriminatory, open and strong higher education policy, even on conflict-laden issues. Only through dialog and solidarity can it be ensured that the Swiss educational landscape does not fall victim to austerity measures, but also offers future generations the same opportunities and prospects.
