Tenancy law templates – an important victory for students

The Association of Swiss Student Unions welcomes the rejection of the two tenancy law proposals by the people. These would have had a massive negative impact on students and further exacerbated the already tight housing market.

The planned changes would have significantly worsened the conditions for subletting. Students, who particularly often live in subletting relationships, would have been severely affected in their housing situation by these proposals. The more difficult subletting, the right of landlords to enforce terminations due to personal use more quickly and the loss of protection of the living situation in disputes would have considerably worsened the living conditions for students.

“The rejection of the rental law proposals is an important signal to students and shows that their concerns are being heard. We must not allow financial stability and mental health to be jeopardized by the interests of the real estate lobby,” explains Julia Bogdan, Co-President of the VSS.

The VSS points out that access to affordable and stable housing is a basic prerequisite for successfully completing a degree. In view of the difficult situation on the housing market – with rising rents and low vacancy rates – it remains all the more important that the needs of students are taken into account in future legislative changes.
